Jon Nelson: Jersey-Born, Florida-Based, and Built Entirely on Hustle
Some artists have origin stories handed to them. Jon Nelson built his from scratch — and the scars from the process are exactly what make his work hit different.
Born and raised in New Jersey, Jon walked straight out of high school into an apprenticeship at a local tattoo shop. After a year, he packed up and moved to Florida for a second apprenticeship under a new mentor — surviving what he calls an "old school" apprenticeship before venturing out on his own. No shortcuts, no cosigns, no blueprint. Just a kid who wanted to tattoo and refused to stop until he was doing it at the highest level.
Dark Fantasy, Delivered
Jon's aesthetic has a name and he owns it: Dark Fantasy Art. Black and grey work that pulls from the darkest corners of imagination — cinematic, heavy, deeply rendered. Skulls with weight behind them. Figures that feel mythological. Compositions that read like stills from a film that doesn't exist yet but absolutely should.
He's renowned for his expertise across black and grey, dotwork, and realism — a combination that gives his pieces a textural range most artists never develop. The dotwork adds dimension and atmosphere. The realism grounds it. The dark fantasy lens ties it all together into something that is unmistakably, entirely his.
With 619K followers on Instagram and over 1.2 million on TikTok, the audience has found him. They always find the real ones eventually.
Borrowed Time Tattoo
After years of bouncing between shops across multiple locations, Jon teamed up with close friends and opened Borrowed Time Tattoo in Fort Lauderdale — a shop built on persistence, shared vision, and the kind of camaraderie that only comes from people who've put in real time together. The shop operates out of two Fort Lauderdale locations and has become a destination for collectors who want serious work done right.
The name says it all. Every tattoo is permanent. Every session is time that means something. Borrowed Time isn't just branding — it's a worldview.
The Culture Behind the Craft
What separates Jon from artists who just technically execute well is that he understands the culture he's operating in. He's an award-winning artist with 12 years in the industry who also happens to have cracked the code on TikTok — using deadpan humor and behind-the-scenes content to pull back the curtain on what life in the shop actually looks like. It's not performative. It's the real thing: a working artist who loves tattooing enough to make you laugh about it.
That combination of serious craft and genuine personality is exactly what Sullen has always represented. Art collective first, brand second — and Jon Nelson embodies that order of operations.
