Zach Goldin: Finding Beauty in the Dark
Tattooing has a way of finding people when they least expect it. For Zach Goldin, the path back to art came during a time when most people would feel completely disconnected from it.
Zach had been drawing since he was a kid, but it wasn’t until he was serving time in prison that he truly returned to it. With little more than time and a pencil, drawing became a daily outlet. Somewhere along the way he tried tattooing, and when he got out, he decided to take it seriously. Looking back now, he calls it the best decision he ever made.
Black & Grey in the Shadows
Zach’s work sits firmly in the world of black and grey realism, but with a darker edge. His tattoos lean heavily into contrast, shadow, and imagery that carries a certain weight to it.
While many of his pieces are larger realism works, he also enjoys pushing detail into smaller tattoos that border on micro-realism. Whether the piece is big or small, the goal stays the same: keep it original and approach the design in a way that feels different from what’s already out there.
Making It His Own
Every tattoo starts with the client’s idea, but for Zach the real work is figuring out how to reinterpret it. Rather than repeating something that’s already been done, he focuses on stylizing each concept in his own way.
That personal approach has become a defining part of his style—dark subject matter paired with clean, deliberate detail.
Cover-Ups and Second Chances
One area of tattooing that has become especially meaningful for Zach is cover-up work.
Still relatively early in his career, it’s a challenge he’s begun taking on more often. His darker style naturally works well for it, allowing older tattoos to disappear beneath deeper tones and stronger imagery. For the people wearing them, it means something even more important: the chance to replace something they regret with something they’re proud of.
Sullen Artist Series
Zach’s connection with Sullen started in a simple way. Ryan reached out after seeing his work and liking what he saw. From there, the conversation grew naturally and eventually led to Zach creating a design for the Artist Series.
For the piece, Zach built on an earlier concept he had done before, expanding it by adding new elements and imagery he enjoys drawing.
Beauty From Darkness
A common thread in Zach’s work is the idea of something beautiful emerging from darker places.
Life growing from death. Growth coming from struggle. That balance between darkness and beauty shows up again and again throughout his tattoos—and it’s a theme that feels fitting for his own story as an artist.
Even now, Zach says he’s still a little surprised to be part of the Sullen Artist Series. But what resonates with him most is what Sullen represents: a brand that supports tattoo artists and the culture surrounding them.
For someone whose journey into tattooing came from an unexpected place, being part of that community means everything.
