Brandon Herrera: Dark Surrealism Born Between Two Worlds

Brandon Herrera didn't arrive at dark surrealism by accident. Born in San Juan del Río, Mexico in 1994 and raised in North Carolina, he grew up navigating two cultures, two aesthetics, two ways of seeing the world — and somewhere in that tension, a tattooist emerged with a visual language entirely his own.

From Mexico to the American South

The journey from San Juan del Río to Mebane, North Carolina isn't a common one, and it shaped Brandon in ways that show up directly in his work. The macabre imagery, the heavy metal influence, the surrealist distortion of reality — these aren't affectations. They're the product of a life spent absorbing contrasts and translating them onto skin.

He now works out of Allegory Ink (@allegoryink) in Mebane, NC, and holds residency at Blood Moon Gallery — a space that reflects the darker, more gallery-forward side of tattoo culture that Brandon gravitates toward naturally.

The Work

Black and grey realism anchors everything Brandon does, but it never tells the whole story. Dark surrealism warps his compositions into something unsettling and cinematic. Trash polka brings chaos and contrast. Metal-inspired imagery pulls from the same well of darkness that has driven underground art culture for decades. The result is work that feels like a still frame from a nightmare — technically immaculate, conceptually deep.

His portraits don't just capture likeness. They capture dread, wonder, and the particular beauty that lives at the edge of both.

Featured in Sullen Magazine

Brandon's work has earned him a feature in Sullen magazine — a recognition that speaks to both his technical level and his cultural alignment with what Sullen has always stood for: art that comes from a genuine place and doesn't apologize for going dark.

With 242,000 followers and a client base that seeks him out specifically for his vision, Brandon is operating at a level that puts him among the most compelling voices in his generation of tattooists.

Sullen Family

Mexican roots, Southern grit, metal-soaked imagery, and a surrealist eye that refuses to be boxed in — Brandon Herrera is Sullen through and through. The brand was built for artists like him: culturally complex, aesthetically uncompromising, and deeply committed to the craft.
